LJ Marx is the interim head coach of the Marquette University women’s volleyball program, stepping into the role in the spring of 2025 after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons beginning in 2023.

Prior to his time at Marquette, Marx led the Carthage College men’s volleyball program for 15 seasons, compiling a 318-131 record. During his tenure, he built a powerhouse program that captured 13 regular season championships and six conference tournament titles. His teams qualified for five NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball Championship appearances, including seven national semifinal runs, and he was named conference Coach of the Year six times. At the time of his departure in 2019, Carthage’s .708 winning percentage ranked second all-time among Division III programs, and Marx was tied for 12th in career wins (318) among all active coaches across divisions.

Throughout his career, Marx has mentored 39 All-Americans, two AVCA Division III National Players of the Year, and three AVCA Newcomers of the Year. A Carthage alumnus, he began coaching with the women’s volleyball team as an undergraduate from 2000–2005 and launched the men’s program in 2005 as its inaugural head coach. He also served as an assistant professor of exercise and sport science at Carthage from 2005-2018.

After stepping down in 2019, Marx continued to shape athletes as program director at Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club and held leadership roles at Northwestern Mutual before returning to collegiate coaching at Marquette.
