LJ Marx, a two-time AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year, is an assistant coach for the Marquette University women’s volleyball program, having joined the staff in 2023. Before arriving at Marquette, Marx spent 15 seasons building a powerhouse at Carthage College as the head coach of the men’s volleyball program, where he compiled a 318-131 record. His teams claimed 13 regular season championships, six conference tournament titles, and made five NCAA Tournament appearances -- including seven national semifinal runs -- while he earned six conference Coach of the Year honors.
Throughout his career, Marx has mentored 39 All-Americans, two AVCA National Players of the Year, and three AVCA Newcomers of the Year. A Carthage alumnus, he began his coaching career with the women’s team as an undergraduate and later served as an assistant professor of exercise and sport science. After stepping down in 2019, he continued shaping athletes as program director at Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club and also held leadership roles at Northwestern Mutual before returning to collegiate coaching at Marquette.
